Great shots Adam. I always enjoy your ventures back into the Botanical side especially the more intimate close up work. It maybe interesting to see some intimate fungal work in the autumn. I'm sure some of those fantastic Canadian forests have some great offerings. Best wishes to you.

I often use a Sony 100-400mm lens with a 1.4x teleconverter for close-ups … this lens focuses fairly close and the quality is excellent. Beautiful images Adam!!!

9:23 I think such a board walk is a good way to kill around 70% of foot traffic. Not everyone needs to go and find the best perspective for a picture and thus go off trail. Most are content with just taking a quick IG snap and thus dont have to tread next to it. But seeing what has happened in Iceland the past 15 years I know what you mean.

Hi Adam. You said in the video around 9:15 that if you use an extension tube, you lose light. I was surprised at that. Since the tube contains no optics, how is light lost? I thought it just increased magnification by moving the lens farther from the sensor.

Adam, so do you also prefer to image stack to get front to back sharpness in wider images, shoot at say f11 or have the background be a little bit blurred for that depth of the image? I know all can be an option just wondering what your preference is based on all the years you spent shooting gardens. Cheers Alan..

For me, I'd make tip no. 5 to no. 1. There's nothing like soft, overcast light for flower photography. I would also mention the use of backlighting, especially for closeups.

I'm a sucker for nice flower shots and it's something I've done over the years. However; stepping back and placing that flower in context with the greater garden - meh, much less skilled there. Something I should work on. Of most of your shots today; the B&W gardener shot was the most striking. Dang! Inspired idea to include her. :bow:

Some gorgeous shots there Adam. You certainly were blessed with photographing some beautiful gardens. Photographing iris is what got me into DSLR photography. Salem, Oregon was well regarded as "iris heaven" with all the hybridizers down there.

Interesting about the greens. Always struggled with them and can be a problem living in Ireland. Liked the black and white option. Would using a linear profile help? Sometimes find it useful to start with a completely raw file with such a range.

As a Seattle native and lifelong resident, I’ve recently started shooting woodland in the PNW. Though I have been shooting since the mid-80’s, it’s a nice change from my usual and fun to get out and adventure. Thanks for the inspiration with similar subject matter. As for the impact of social media, I am doing my part by not seeking out the same locations that have been photographed ad nauseam already. Instead, I seek out new places and photograph them with more of an Eggleston “democratic forest” approach. I don’t see much point in showing up to crowds of people to take the same photograph. Look at that town in Japan so overrun by people taking the same photo of Mt. Fuji looming above a convenience store that they had to resort to putting up barriers that block the view to keep people out of the street. Then they started poking holes in the barrier to get a shot! Humans…I go out in nature to get away from them, not be in crowds of them. 😂

Thanks for that Adam - I did find that helpful. I've been tossing up the investment in a macro lens and for the moment just make use of my zoom lenses. My old system with Pentax had a switch on the telephoto at 300mm to go to macro and it did fairly well for my skill level at the time. Don't go looking for macro very often so something like this might be worth considering. Something more to ponder . . . .

This video was a huge help Adam! I do lots of nature macro photography with my Nikon Z 100-400mm lens which focuses amazingly close by itself. I add an old, discontinued (I bought it back in the film-only days) Canon 500D diopter for closer to "life-size" magnifications. It's a stellar piece of equipment but currently has no peer in the market. Until you just showed me the 77mm Kase diopter! I'm so paranoid about losing/damaging the 500D but this Kase diopter could be just the ticket! Thanks! BTW, master nature macro photographer John Shaw in his now long out-of-print book, Closeups In Nature, gives an excellent explanation of using diopters with zooms.

Back in my SLR days with my Minolta SR-T201 I used the same cheap closeup filters of which you speak. While it was fun, it wasn't epic. I now have an 11mm and 18mm extension tubes that I tend to use on my RF 15-35mm (at 35mm). Now, with the help of your video I think I'll try the 18mm using 100-500mm on our local "Ghost Pipe": aka "Indian Pipe" or "Ghost Plant". Thank you for another great video!

Thanks for the video! I use a Canon close-up lens named 500D (it's weird because it has the same name as a Canon DSLR). It has excellent image quality and doesn't reduce light intake. Interestingly, mine has a 58mm thread, but I attach it into my Canon 100mm macro, which has a 67mm thread using step-down rings, and it works fine without reducing the field of view. I usually combine the macro lens, Kenko extension tubes (also great quality), and the close-up lens, according to the desired magnification. Macro photography is all about experimentation and creativity, so there's room for a variety of gear to be used. Cheers!

Great advice. I got the Nisi close-up lens, which looks very similar to the Kase. As you say, it works in a pinch. Since I usually also carry a nodal slide for panoramic, it can be used as a poor mans focusing rail as you describe. I can't justify a dedicated macro lens, but the tiny Panasonic L mount 100/2.8 is very tempting at only 300g.

14:26 I am pretty sure I took the same image back in 2022. Those groves in Carmanah are amazingly beautiful. I would love to go back one day with more time. But for now I am enjoying seeing you work in the forest! Thanks for yet another great image!

The last 2 spring/summers Down Under I've got out in the garden with the 55-250mm lens on my 200d to pretty much do the same thing, usually late afternoon when the shrubs have had a watering so they have like it's a morning dew look
